GEORGE FREDERICK BRISTOW (1825-1898): Symphony No. 2 “Jullien”, Overture to the Opera Rip van Winkle, Overture Winter’s Tale.

Description: Bristow wrote five symphonies. The F sharp minor symphony which came out on Chandos was the chronological third (1858). This one ought to be called No. 1 by that measure but is the chronological second, dating from 1853. A longer work than its successor, it’s in four movements lasting 43 minutes and, whereas the F minor has its share of Mendelssohnian elvishness and echoes of Schumann, this one has more than a bit of Beethoven as well. Weber might pop into your head on one occasion but it also occurred to me that Bristow likely knew his Spohr as well as he knew the now-more-famous composers just mentioned. The result is an early Romantic American symphony that really can stand with the Spohrs and Raffs, Volkmanns and Eduard Francks across the Atlantic.
