Description: Finally, a Belgian composer born in the last decades of the 19th century who didn't die of disease or get killed in World War I! Durlet was a piano professor at the Royal Flemish Conservatory for 39 years but still found time to write 50 piano pieces, a piano concerto, a violin concerto and, among other things, over 300 piano versions of works by 18th-century Flemish harpsichordists. He also loved pictorial titles as you can see above. The sonata (1936) consists of a two-part "Eulogy of the Inner Life", "Funeral Stele" and "The Temptation of St. Anthony" - lyrical late Romanticism with a marked mystical vein. The Paraphrase (1934) is a virtuoso piano piece, The Refuge... a meltingly lyrical romantic piece from 1946 while the other very short pieces are cut from the same cloth. Then, the Old Flemish Melodies (1941-43) are sparkling little pearls from the above-mentioned Flemish harpsichordists. Kiyotaka Izumi (piano), Eliot Lawson (violin), David Cohen (cello).
