Description: "Bach in the Romantic Manner" is the title of this disc which gives us three different versions of the famous Chaconne; Mendelssohn's is perhaps the least interventionist, attempting to expand the sound as Bach did in his own "orchestration" of the BWV 1006 Prelude in his Cantata No. 29. Ressel takes a lot more liberties, interested in expanding the possibilities of variation in the Chaconne in his piano line. Of significant interest is the remaining first movement of a violin sonata written in 1838 (about the times of Mendelssohn's performances of the Bach pieces with David), whose 12-minute span, with hints of Beethoven's G major piano concerto, was plainly the first part of a sonata of symphonic proportions. Mayumi Hirasaki (violin), Christine Schornsheim (1848 Pleyel fortepiano).
