JOHN LUTHER ADAMS (b.1953): Ilimaq.
Catalogue Number: 11R078
Description: Ilimaq is a native Alaskan Inupiaq word that translates loosely as 'Spirit Journeys'. Adams' piece is an electroacoustic soundscape written for and with alternative rock drummer and composer Glenn Kotche. Adams' ambient background consists of synthesized and transformed instrumental sounds, and sampled field recordings of natural sounds. Kotche, a creative and versatile percussionist capable of much more than laying down a basic rock 'n roll beat, contributes what might broadly be characterized as 'tribal drumming', in an ethnically unspecific sense; rhythmically complex, supple and attention-grabbingly intense and compelling; elsewhere his contribution is part of the ambient sonic tapestry. The work divides into five sections, without pause, which differ in texture and the balance between the two components. A bonus DVD contains a surround-sound and a stereo version of the same recording. Glenn Kotche (percussion).
