Description: An Austrian who succeeded Muffat at Passau court and cathedral, Aufschnaiter seems to have rivalled Bach in his masterful polyphony expanded through modulation into distant keys (conductor Letzbor calls Aufschnaiter “the Catholic Bach”). Here is an Austrian sound which will appeal to lovers of Biber and Schmelzer. Hugl was an organist at Passau for several years in the 1730s and his keyboard pieces are interspersed through Aufschnaiter’s Vespers. St. Florianer Sängknaben, Ars Antiqua Austria; Gunar Letzbor.
