Description: This original version of the 1908 sonata is ten minutes longer than the 29-minute Naxos recording of the revised version from the 1950s which came out five years ago (08M059). The younger Scott oozed self-confidence and disregarded formal control with his rhapsodic forward motion and constant metrical shifts which flummoxed its original audience. The opposite pole is the 1956 Fourth, a mere 16 minutes, brittle and aphoristic, a work of mature mastery and sharp precision of thought. Andrew Kirkman (violin), Clipper Erickson (piano).
