Description: The two orchestral works here - the 1936 neo-classical Sinfonietta and the more gritty, rhythmically driven 1946 symphony - were both on Hyperion in 2009 (11L011), so we offer this for the unusual pair of same-instrument quartets. The first of these was developed in 1949 as a teaching aid for her violin class at the Lodz Conservatory and is in her more typical neo-classical style, in three movements (11 minutes), both suggesting Vivaldi or Telemann but with the expressiveness of Shostakovich or Prokofiev, while the 14-minute one for cellos (1964), in its occasional similarity to the sonorism of her contemporary, Penderecki, shows Bacewicz' wide stylistic range.
