Description: This large-scale setting, in Polish and incorporating texts from a Papal encyclical, is a very personal statement by a respected Polish composer primarily known in the field of contemporary jazz. There is almost no trace of this in the music; the work is dedicated to the memory of Pope John Paul II, and the piece is a reverent religious work through and through. Elements of theatricality - some spoken rhythmic chanting, vocal declamations by the soloists - are minor accents in the whole; the delightfully folk-dance-like Sanctus (it could almost be a transcription of Dvorak!) emphasizes the element of celebration amid the serious intent of the work as a whole. Broadly neo-Romantic and instantly accesible and potentially popular, though not 'populist' in any negative sense, the work recalls essays in religious music by composers skilled in the craftsmanship of more commercial musical forms, such as Geoffrey Burgon's Requiem. Magdalena Gruszczynska-Wojtczak (soprano), Wieslawa Maliszewska (alto), Piotr Kusiewicz (tenor), Piotr Lempa (bass), Choirs Iuventus Cantans, Kakofonia, Synthagma and of P.S.M. II St., Sinfonia Baltica; Bohdan Jarmolowicz.
