Description: This piece was composed for a symposium on modern, monumental sculpture in stone, that took place last year. The twelve easy-going and attractive movements all feature the quartet in various combinations, sometimes with the composer on the flute or (sometimes very mildly prepared) piano. The music is resolutely tonal and instantly approachable; sometimes a gesture here or there will recall Debussy, Poulenc, Milhaud in jazz-inflected mood; sometimes straying in the direction of Nyman or Legrand. Repetitive elements - not really minimalism - and movements with a distinct ostinato pulse suggest a kind of promenade, as though the listener were strolling the lawns between the sculptures and inspecting them at leisure. As a soundtrack to such an imaginary activity - and the booklet, largely devoid of notes, is well illustrated with tasteful black and white photographs of sculptures-in-progress to assist with conjuring up the necessary imagery - the music works very effectively, though one suspects that it might not stand up to repeated concert exposure without the sculptural associations. Very attractive nonetheless. Line Adam (transverse flute, piano), Quatuor Thaïs.
