Description: The op. 21 sonata, from 1945, is in two movements, the first of which is slow and marked by elements of Jewish music and the second a toccata-like movement with a calmer middle section. The solo sonata (1960) has a long, musing, slow first movement, an allegretto middle with modal inflections and a finale suggestive of Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 7, composed the same year. The excellent notes point out that influences flowed both ways between Shostakovich and Vainberg and points out several more examples just in these three works. Alexander Chaushian (cello), Yeveny Sudbin (piano).
