Description: The last time something like this appeared was at the end of the 1980s when Accord boxed all five of their recordings made 1983-88. That also included some songs and the few piano pieces Magnard left while this one offers a fourth disc of 65 minutes of lectures by Harry Halbreich (who also did the Accord notes) if you want to practice your French. Still, all the chamber music is here on three CDs, making this a mid-price release, all of the recordings were made between January and July of this year and it's a great way to get to know Magnard's characterful, attractive, sometimes impassioned and grandiloquent (i.e. the 40-minute violin sonata from 1901),sometimes fresh and charming (the 1894 quintet) music. 4 CDs for the price of 2. Quatuor Élysée, Ensemble Initium, Solenne Païdassi (violin), Camille Thomas (cello), Laurent Wagschal (piano)
