JOHANNES SCHENCK (1660-1712): Le Nymphe di Rheno - Sonatas II, III, VII, VIII, XI & XII.

Description: This work (published in 1702) by the relatively obscure Dutch composer is a cycle of 12 sonatas for two bass viols. The viols are equal in nature, no melody-accompaniment tyranny here as melodies and motifs are passed back and forth, sometimes note by note. The sonatas recorded here are in the goûts reunis style of hybrid French-Italian, with various French dance movements following brief, Italian-style introductions.
