WILLIAM WALTON (1902-1983): Troilus and Cressida.
Catalogue Number: 09Q068
Reference: CHAN 241-50
Description: Written over a long period 1948 to 1954, Troilus (via Chaucer, not Shakespeare) marks a boundary between Walton's early, intense, romantic period and his later refined and more reflective works. It was pilloried by critics at its premiere for its conservatism and Walton made numerous changes in it, all of which were ultimately dumped and this recording, made in association with performances of the original version in Leeds, was accepted by critics as a triumph. 2 CDs. Libretto included. Judith Howarth (soprano), Yvonne Howard (mezzo), Arthur Davies (tenor), Chorus of Opera North, English Northern Philharmonia; Richard Hickox. Original 1995 release.
