Description: For the second time in 20 years, we get a young Estonian violinist (this time, the pianist is young too) surveying the violin chamber music of Estonia's most famous composer after Arvo Pärt. Note: the solo violin sonata (1962), a densely textured, complex piece comparable to Bartók's solo sonata was not on the two-disc BIS set which came out in 1992. If you know Tubin's symphonies, you'll know what to expect from the rest of these pieces: suggestions of Estonian folk music (obviously more than suggestions in the Dance Tunes), a general "nordic" atmosphere sometimes approaching the "legendary" character of Sibelius and Bax and Tubin's most personal characteristic, a love of insistently rhythmic tarantella-like finales. Sigrid Kuulmann (violin), Marko Martin (piano).
