Description: Newman is an artist who has worked in a variety of media, including composition, and these works might fairly be characterized as the compositional equivalent of a type of performance art, which is one of Newman's many disciplines. The first is a kind of pastiche of synthetic styles, from pre-classical through Beethoven to a more romantic idiom. The fourth temporally rearranges the parts of a C.P.E Bach sonata to produce a variety of clashes and dissonances, while not actually changing the basic material. The sixth juxtaposes material in a similar fashion, except that in this case, the right hand is Beethoven, while the left is Newman's. Finally, the tenth uses pitches derived from Schubert, while the rhythms to which they are applied are from Varèse. These various forms of combination of material produce a new kind of experimental piano writing, one that acknowledges its antecedents and traditions, while forcing the listener to experience them in a completely novel way. Michael Finnissy (piano).
