Description: One early work, from the composer's "objective nationalist" period in which he reimagines folk music using folkish thematic and rhythmic elements in an increasingly dissonant and rigorous vocabulary, and then two from his "neo-Expressionist" period - dodecaphony and free atonality mix in works demanding on both players and listener (and, in the 1973 Third Quartet, a hard-worked soprano).
