Description: The sonata of 1900 is in a traditional three-movement form and the Romanticism of Rachmaninov is tempered by a Gallic reserve. The brief Elégie has been offered in these pages before as well (04J072), but this is the only available recording (put this way since a 1950s Russian radio recording existed once but is lost and has never been published) of the piano quintet (1916) which, after a Scriabinesque turn in the Violin Sonata No. 2, seems to show Catoire turning back again toward a rich late Romanticism.
