Description: The longest work here is the first recording of the 1914-15, four-movement “For a Chivalric Tale”. In 1914-15, Malipiero worked on an opera set at King Arthur’s court which he later withdrew and claimed to have destroyed. The reasons involve an affair between the librettist and the composer’s wife but we are lucky to ave, in the booklet notes, a full discussion of the events which the music, often of a film score quality, describes. The coupling brings the 1932 violin concerto with both neo-baroque and 20th-century lyrical impulses and its 1963 sibling whose angular lines and dissonant texture partially hide a still present lyrical bent. Paolo Chiavacchi (violin), Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma; Francesco La Vecchia.
