PHILIP GLASS (b.1937): Aguas de Amazonia.

Description: This suite of connected pieces started life in the early 1990s as a ballet score, and was soon taken up by the Brazilian group UAKTI, who arranged it for their percussion-dominated ensemble. This orchestration by Charles Coleman returns it to the vicinity of the canon of Glass' large-scale scores, though not exactly, as although he clearly took cues from Glass' orchestral style of the Satyagraha era, he also incorporates 'ethnic' elements in acknowledgement of the piece's 'world music' origins. Some movements sound familiar, as Glass reworked them into other pieces, but most are unique to this score. One could debate whether this or the UAKTI version sounds more authentically Glassian (Glassy? Vitreous?), as the group's synthesizers and winds resemble the Philip Glass Ensemble, but in any event this lively, colorful and attractive score is welcome back in its opulent orchestral garb.
