WALTER BRAUNFELS (1882-1954): Prelude to the Opera Don Gil of the Green Breeches, Op. 35/2, Divertimento for Radio Orchestra, Op. 42, Serenade in E Flat, Op. 20, Ariel’s Song, Op. 18.
Catalogue Number: 05W003
Description: The most unusual item here is the five-movement Divertimento of 1929, part of a batch of commissions of many composers for music to be performed live on the new German radio network (cpo released a two-CD box of six such works back in 2014 - 01Q010). He employs two saxophones but does not otherwise refer much to popular music of the time. The other good-sized piece, the 1910 Serenade has at least two other recordings. Its inspiration in the composer’s recent and happy marriage is as Richard Straussian as some of its music depicting that conjugal bliss. ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra; Gregor Bühl.
