Description: This is great fun! Desenne's high-spirited take-off, or send-up, with the pitch-perfect delivery of a great comedian or literary wit, of the northern seasons with which we're all familiar, would brighten the greyest November day. The idea came from a novel by Alejo Carpentier which culminates with a musical meeting of the minds between Caribbean musicians and Vivaldi, Handel and Scarlatti in Venice. From this surreal but intriguing notion Desenne has forged a suite infused with Caribbean vitality and rhythmic bounce in which Baroque gestures (and little quotations from Vivaldi's concerti) surface as though we were indeed listening to an improvisatory jam session with the Soave, Prosecco and Rhum flowing freely. A perfect companion to Piazzolla's delicious Buenos Aires seasons in this splendid transcription by César Olguín after that of José Bragato, for string orchestra, string quartet and piano, which ingeniously emulates the indispensable Bandoneon part from the original version for Piazzolla's quintet. Saul Bitran (violin), Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Unitas Ensemble; Lina González-Granados.
