Description: This is the first-ever recording of Korngold's complete score for a play premiered in Vienna in 1920, reconstructed from its original Viennese materials and played by the chamber-orchestral forces of the original scoring (string quartet, oboe, flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, two horns, trumpet, trombone, piano, harmonium, harp, timpani and three percussionists). A little over three minutes of music has never been recorded in any way before. Although most of Korngold's music was for scene changes, some of it underscored lines delivered by the actors and those parts are reproduced faithfully here. In addition to the 48 minutes of recording which is the result, five of the movements (totalling 21 minutes) are also played again at the end of the disc without dialoque. A track-by-track synopsis leads you through the play. University of North Carolina School of the Arts Drama Soloists and Symphony Orchestra; John Mauceri.
