Description: The title of this disc is "Romantic Mexican Quartets" and they're not kidding. While favoring a tense chromaticism and some more modern harmonies, the high emotional temperature of both Carrasco's and de Elías' quartets and the reliance on good, old-fashioned melody along with the contrapuntal skill demanded by the genre make it plain that these composers, while working in the 20th century, are unashamed of the Romantic tradition (and these two also use Mexican folk music in their finales). After all, Carrasco's quartet was written in 1944 and Rachmaninov was still writing in that style, wasn't he? Campo's is the only "truly" Romantic piece, dating from 1889, but it is also the lightest in terms of emotional content. Cuarteto Latinoamericano.
