Description: This is the revised version of the banned Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk which Shostakovich had premiered in 1963; this was its first recording (1964). The composer removed most of the crude, naturalistic language and musical effects even before the opera was suppressed in 1935 but, for this version, he even modified the extremes of tessitura and replaced two orchestral entr'actes. In the West, Lady Macbeth remains the version performed but up until the end of the USSR, this revised version was the only one to be seen in Russia. 3 CDs. No libretto. E. Andreyeva (soprano), G. Efimov (tenor), Boris Timofeyevich (bass), Chorus and Orchestra of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre; Gennady Provatorov.
