FRANZ ANTON HOFFMEISTER (1754-1812): Flute Concertos No. 21 in D and No. 24 in D.
Catalogue Number: 04O030
Description: World Premiere Recordings of these two of Hoffmeister's 25 flute concertos (he also wrote 66 symphonies). Dating respectively from 1788 and 1795, they both stand out for the rapid runs, virtuosic passagework and extreme register changes which tax the soloist. No. 21 tends toward the elegant with catchy melodies while No. 24 adds trumpets and timpani to give it a radiant and often march-like character. At 30 and 27 minutes, these are full-scale Classical concertos where, unlike in Mozart, the flute and the orchestra oppose each other as separate entities. Bruno Meier (flute), Prague Chamber Orchestra.
