JULIUS ROENTGEN (1855-1932): Serenade No. 1 for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons, Op. 14, Serenade No. 2 for Wind Quintet, Trio for Flute, Oboe and Bassoon, Op. 86.

Description: Roentgen, being a string player from a family of string players, left little wind music but his first Serenade, a 31-minute piece from his youth (1876) was praised by Brahms, Herzogenberg and Clara Schumann, which might give you a pretty good idea of who it sounds like. The Second, much shorter (16 min.) dates from 52 years later and is less elaborate in form, melodies and harmonies; perhaps some French influence crept in? The 13-minute trio from 1917 may have been intended for teachers and students at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Linos Ensemble.
