ENRIQUE GRANADOS (1867-1916): Orchestral Works, Vol. 1 - Suite on Galician Songs, Incidental music for the play Torrijos, March of the Defeated (World Premiere Recordings).

Description: Completely unknown, these orchestral works start a series marking Granados’ 100th anniversary. The 30-minute suite of 1899 uses four Galician folk melodies or dance rhythms, the five short pieces of incidental music from 1894 are vividly colored to underline the action of the play about the general who tried to bring down the Spanish monarchy in 1831 while the seven-minute March (1899) is so evocative of defeat that it’s hard to believe that it’s not a memorial to an actual event.
