GAVIN BRYARS (b.1943): Piano Concerto (The Solway Canal) (Capella Amsterdam, Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic; Otto Tausk), Solo Piano: Ramble on Cortona, After Handel's Vesper.

Description: This live recording from Feb. 2010 was the world premiere performance of Bryars' concerto, a half-hour long piece with a male chorus which periodically intones two sonnets by Scottish poet Edwin Morgan while the soloist expresses himself through the non-virtuosic means of touch, sound color and lyricism; Bryars' tendency to obsessive repetition is most evident in the orchestral part (one can't say accompaniment since the orchestra no more "accompanies" than the pianist is a soloist). The two solo works (1995 and 2010) illustrate the composer's interest in early music as part of a post-minimalist style. Ralph van Raat (piano).
