MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996): Piano Sonata No. 1, Children's Notebooks Nos. 1-3, Opp. 16, 19 & 23.
Catalogue Number: 03M076
Reference: 777 517
Description: The 15-minute sonata, written in 1940, encompasses sarcastic wit, powerful energy and, at times, a minimalist intensity while offering a sad, lyrical slow movement. Weinberg wrote his three sets of Notebooks in 1944/45, which likely explains their consistent serious, somber, sometimes frightening and lugubrious character. The echoes of Jewish music may recall the millions of murdered Jewish children in music which is far from the established genre of Kinderszenen, demanding a high level of competence from the pianist. Elisaveta Blumina (piano).
