CAMILLO SCHUMANN (1872-1946): Cello Sonatas No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 59 and No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 99, 2 Konzertstücke, Op 20.
Catalogue Number: 03M059
Description: Newcomers to Camillo Schumann's music will be shocked that such melodic beauty, lyrical fervor and sheer compositional mastery have been ignored for so long. Each of these works is conceived on an almost orchestral scale (the Konzerstücke especially; they could easily be reductions of the slow and final movements of a cello concerto) with the piano slightly the more favored of the instruments (the titles of Schumann's three sonatas for the instrument are "Sonata for Piano and Cello") but the cello gets its due and the mercurial interplay between the instruments is masterful. Another gifted Late Romantic bulldozed by post-World War II modernism. Maria Kliegel (cello), Francesco Piemontesi (piano).
