Description: Ten months after Chandos' world premiere recording of these two works, we have an entirely different take on them from Kurt Sanderling's son. Vibrant and youthful in Polyansky's recording in Moscow, with a freshness that pointed up the similarities between this work and Tchaikovsky's Second, the First Symphony is given the Germanic iron hand here (33:45 compared with 28:30 on Chandos). Ditto for the Third (42:05 but 35:04 on Chandos) - and we're not talking about repeats being taken on the Naxos disc either! Not that these are unmusical. If you happen to remember the differences between the Weber symphonies as conducted by Marriner on ASV and, say, Sawallisch on Orfeo, you'll know what I mean. True collectors will want both. Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra; Thomas Sanderling.
