Description: These works feature the Scandinavian influences that the Swedish violinist Amanda Meier and the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg exerted on Röntgen’s music for violin and piano. Maier was Röntgen’s great love and his first wife, and Grieg was his best friend. Grieg is represented in the F major sonata that Röntgen wrote in 1908 as an in memoriam piece. The other sonata (1879) is a carefree, open-hearted piece full of youthful elan. The Swedish Songs and Dances (1882-85) may initially seem unassuming, but display the highest virtuosity. Christoph Schickedanz (violin), Ernst Breidenbach (piano).
