Description: Dating from 1880 and 1886, both quartets impressively confirm the words of the Draeseke connoisseur Christoph Schlüren: ‘Although Draeseke’s nature was primarily lyrical, he had a captivating acerbity and probed the dark, introverted worlds of expression with unique imaginative power. His expansive melodies are tailored for contrapuntal suitability; his rhythm is especially vibrant and diverse, particularly for a German composer; and his music has distinct stylistic ties not only to Beethoven, but also to Mendelssohn. Yet his extremely colorful harmonic language, sometimes spiced with surprising modulations, is a highly personal development of the ‘progressivist’ stance of the New Germans proceeding from Wagner and Liszt.” Constanze Quartet.
