Description: Back in June 2011, a single Naxos disc of Leighton’s organ music came out about which we briefly said “A mix of melodic lyricism, masterly counterpoint and, especially in the big, 40-minute Missa de Gloria from 1980, organ color and dynamic rhythmic energy (although the Et Resurrexit builds to its own impressive, grand climax too)”. With the œuvre at hand, the picture broadens to include bleak austerity (Martyrs) and psychological profundity (the big, 26-minute violin-and-organ Fantasy on “Es ist Genug”, dating from 1979 and written in memory of Leighton’s father). 3 CDs. Stephen Farr (organs of St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh; Symphony Hall, Birmingham and St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge; harpsichord).
