Description: Author, painter and composer, Herberigs was first an example of Flemish Impressionism, demonstrated here by his piano suite Ariane (1922) whose textures draw on Debussy and Ravel. The Eve song-cycle, from the same year, sets symbolist texts by a 19th century Flemish composer in polytonal colors and in complex and enigmatic harmonies suggesting late Fauré. The Flemish-language song-cycle (1932-42) and the other piano suite (1942) are from a later stylistic period in which Herberigs evokes a Flemish past in which joy of life and melancholy are two sides of the same coin. French/Flemish-English texts. Martine De Craene (soprano), Daniel Blumenthal (piano).
