Description: The major discographic gain here is the violin and piano Variations. 'Imaginary' because they are not true variations on a theme, but rather a sequence of episodes with some motivic material - which is clearly identifiable and lends the piece the kind of unity associated with classical variation form - in common. The two instruments interact in a variety of textures and moods, functioning very much as equals. A relatively recent work, from 2010, the idiom is the familiar extended tonality of the composer's maturity. The 1976 Moment Musical for solo cello is in a somewhat more abrasive idiom, with some innovative technical touches including pizzicato chords followed by a glissando, and heavy rhythmic playing. The piece requires formidable bravura virtuosity. The five-movement is cast in an idiom not so very far from the last chamber works of Shostakovich (this is especially apparent in the brooding slow movement with its distant chiming funerary bells). This slow movement and the concluding passacaglia-funeral march form the emotional fulcrum and summation of this powerful work, a particularly noteworthy addition to the already fortunate trio repertoire of the 20th century. The 1981 Canzona is in a similar style, with long-breathed melodic lines and a taut, energetic section, both reminiscent of Shostakovich. Misterioso was written as a competition piece, but it emphasizes refinement, delicacy and expressiveness over showy virtuosity, resulting in a superb, soaring concert aria for the violin. Poznań Piano Trio.
