Description: Slowinski's youthful (1956-57) concerto is a bright, carefree example of the neo-classicism tolerated by the Polish Communist authorities of that period. Auschwitz and Dachau survivor Laks wrote his string symphony in 1964 and, as in all of his compositions, it hews to classical ideals and form (the traditional four movements) and speaks a modern neo-classical language but with a much wider emotional range while Pstrokonska-Nawratil's "Like the Sun and the Sea" of 2007, in three movements ("The Beach", "The Deep" and "Golden Wind"), is a freely tonal work inspired by the weather and topography of the Gulf of Mexico which sometimes approaches minimalism but which offers many colorful and attractive combinations of sound. Lukasz Dlugosz (flutes), Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra; Krzysztof Slowinski. 2012 release.
