Description: Impassioned and romantic, Swayne's output for cello is instantly accessible and invigoratingly varied in style and expression. The suite is obviously based on baroque models - well, Bach - with Romantic and (mildly) modernistic interpolations. Canto reflects Swayne's interest in African music, both in its modal melodic and complex rhythmic structures. The Lyrical Pieces exploit the cello's passionate, quasi-vocal character, while the sonata, an impressive four-movement work of substantial scale and content, contrasts angular and abrupt piano writing with soaring cello lines in the first movement, followed by a gently elegiac slow movement, a playful and energetic scherzo and a final set of variations which invokes echoes of Prokofiev and Shostakovich in the insistent yet varied character of the interchange of argument between cello and piano. Robert Irvine (cello), Fali Pavri (piano).
