ROBERT CRAWFORD (b.1925): 6 Bagatelles, Op. 3, Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 5, A Saltire Sonata, Sonata Breve, Piano Quintet.
Catalogue Number: 01K086
Description: Crawford has enjoyed a successful two-part career; as a young composer in the 40s and 50s, interrupted by work for the press and BBC, and then after his retirement in the 1980s. This disc contains works from both periods, which display a remarkable consistency of style. The substantial piano sonata, warmly expressive with no shortage of virtuosic glitter, and the Bagatelles, six strongly contrasting character-pieces, are pre-interruption works. There is a tendency toward a freer use of the whole chromatic scale, and tougher harmony in the works from the 1990s and 2000s, but the underlying core of tonality is a strong as ever the textures equally bold and the expression as direct. Edinburgh Quartet, Nicholas Ashton (piano).
