Description: Penderecki completists will want this disc of transcriptions. The clarinet concerto is a 1997 version of the 1983 Viola Concerto (which also exists in a cello version from 1989 by Boris Pergamenschikov) while the flute work (1992), dedicated to Rampal, was later (1995) transcribed for clarinet (got all this straight?). Pergamenschikov also provided the 1994 orchestral transcription of the choral Agnus Dei, part of the composer's Polish Requiem. Both concertos are firmly in Penderecki's neo-Romantic, late style, both single-movement works in six sections with attractive melodies and rhythmic variety with, in the earlier work, just a bit of seasoning from the early, sonoristic days. Dmitri Ashkenazy (clarinet), David Aguilar (flute), Sinfonia Varsovia; Krzysztof Penderecki.
