WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (1908-1988): Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 34, Symphony No. 3 in C, Op. 48

Description: A descendant of the poet's brother, Wordsworth studied under Tovey, to whom the Second (1947-8) is dedicated - a work in four movements approaching 45 minutes in a language which may owe a little to Sibelius and to Bartók in its energetic and fragmented thematic ideas but which is original enough to demand repeated listening to gain acquaintance. Ditto for the Third (1952), a shorter work (27 minutes) in three movements. Original 1990 CD release. London Philharmonic Orchestra; Nicholas Braithwaite.
