Description: This unusual collection seems to have originated in 2001 as a private European promotional release. "Don Quixote Ridiculed" was an opera which won the 1929 competition announced by the Rome Royal Opera House but Messina died before it could be orchestrated. We don't know why the young Pessina (a composition student of Azio Corghi) turned his attention to this piece, but he's provided a 32-minute sequence of seven pieces, all but one (a central "scherzo" which uses multiple themes) transcriptions of arias. An attractive piece for string orchestras in a generally sunny mood and conservative style. Rota's work is the known quantity while Pessina's own Concertango is an entertaining fusion of the rhythms and sounds of the tango with the compositional style of the baroque concerto grosso. Orchestra Sinfonica Adriatica; Paolo Pessina.
