Description: These six new miniature quartets were commissioned in memory of Pamela Majaro, founder of the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust, which exists to promote chamber music in schools. All the pieces are tonal and instantly accessible, which would undoubtedly have pleased Majaro, with her determination to bring chamber music to the widest audience. The works range from the gently elegaic, with classical allusions (Frances-Hoad's melodic Invocatio, Haasler's elegant little fugue, McDowall's lilting Nightingale, after Keats and Beethoven) to the warmly celebratory (Waley-Cohen, Knotts - both determined and visionary). Panufnik's Votive bridges the two, beginning as a quiet yet intense lament based on a 'Kol Nidrei' over a gently pulsing accompaniment and swelling to a passionately affirmative eulogy. Zinn's 1986 treatment of the Kol Nidrei, with its blend of sorrow and hope, perfectly complements the mood of the program. Wihan Quartet.
