HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS (1887-1959): Symphony No. 1 “O Imprevisto”, Symphony No. 2 “Ascensão”.
Catalogue Number: 12T006
Description: There is little Brazilian "national color" in either of these early (1916 and 1917) works, though the composer's trademark colorful orchestration and busy textures show you how much nationalism and V-L’s own style have in common. Both symphonies are strong and striking musical statements, the First having a subtext grounded in fin de siècle occult mysticism and the Second, sprawling across nearly 50 minutes, filters various influences including Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Debussy and Puccini. São Paolo Symphony Orchestra; Isaac Karabtchevsky.
