Description: Unlike October’s offering of the Shostakovich unfinished sonata on Challenge Classics (see 10O058 for details), this one has rather more rare material with a string quartet movement arranged in the early to mid 1960s by the first violinist of the legendary Beethoven Quartet (who gave most of the premieres of Shostakovich’s string quartets), a piano duet arrangement of the Stravinsky dating from circa 1930. But the strangest thing is not early Shostakovich, it’s the 1972 transcription of a song by the Italian composer Braga which figures in Anton Chekhov’s 1894 short story “The Black Mask” which was the last of several unrealized opera plans which, in this case, went no further than a few sketches. Presumably, La Serenata would have played a part in the opera. Russian (Cyrillic)-English text. Sasha Rozhdestvensky (Violin), Jeremy Menuhin (piano), Mookie Lee-Menuhin (duet pianist), Ilona Domnich (soprano), Alexandra Sherman (mezzo).
