Description: Overlooked by its US distributor when it was first released two years ago, this Christmas disc will please collectors of conservative English choral-orchestral music. The cantata (1966) consists of seven well-known German, French, Latin and English Christmas songs (like Wie schön eleuchtet der Morgenstern, Les Anges de nos Campagnes and Coventry Carol), the eight carols (O little town of Bethlehem, Good King Wenceslas, The Holly and the Ivy etc.) are sometimes unaccompanied, sometimes with piano or oboe. The Chamber Concerto of 1969 is a 15-minute, three-movement work plays with jazz and neo-baroque styles with a group consisting of string quartet, double bass, horn, bassoon and oboe and has a number of spots which should make you grin. Stephen King (organ), City of London Choir, Paulina Voices, The Holst Orchestra; Hilary Davan Wetton, Christ Gardner (Chamber Concerto).
