Description: The fluctuation between traditional and avant-garde of Balada's late style is present in both the Symphony of Sorrows (2005) which is inspired by the suffering of both sides in the Spanish Civil War and which uses a popular song from each side as its main material, and in the concerto (2006) whose motivation was Germany's post-war economic recovery. The 1972 Steel Symphony (remember the old New World LP?) is completely atonal but not without rhythmic interest as it was inspired by the various sounds making up the cacophony of a Pittsburgh steel plant.
