Description: Finally, the long-awaited and much anticipated complete recording of Finnissy's magnum opus, an encyclopaedic survey of contemporary pianistic technique and the musical past, inspired by a very personal selection of figures and events in the arts and world history. Finnissy's compositional process involved the 'appropriation' of a vast range of material, which was transmuted into what is in effect the most ambitious work of multi-layered transcription ever attempted. The composer's characteristic textures - from extended monody to extravagant density and complexity - are certainly present, but it is the layering of ideas in Finnissy's huge collage of edited, recontextualized and transformed musical 'photographs' that makes this mammoth work so dazzling, provocative, and ultimately, rewarding. 5 CDs. Ian Pace (piano).
