ÁLVARO CASSUTO (b.1935): Return to the Future, Song of Loneliness, To Love and Peace, Visiting Friends for Piano and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 12P071
Description: Don't be fooled by the New Age-y titles. Yes, these works are tonal (Cassuto makes a point of dividing his serial and Darmstadt period from his works which "address the widest possible audience") but they aren't simplistic. You may think of Minimalism because Return to the Future is based on the ostinato from Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 but Cassuto also heads in other, unexpected directions in this 1985 work. Both Song of Loneliness (1972) and To Love and Peace (1973) are based on the harmonic exploration of a single key or note, thus leading to a certain minimal quality in its own right. Visiting Friends (1986), originally not meant for publication, imagines encounters with some of Cassuto's favorite composers, none of whom are named in his note, leaving what he's up to entirely up to you. Antonio Rosado (piano), Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Álvaro Cassuto.
