Description: Zelenski's quartet is a powerful combination of muscular, sinewy piano writing which recalls Brahms and a severe, melancholy Slavic sensibility and it's remarkable how he can blend lyricism with momentum (the tarantella-like finale has certainly got plenty of both). I can only find one or two dates for any of Zelenski's works so I can only guess that this one comes from the first decade of the 20th century. Zarebski's quintet appeared in these pages on the Dux label in Sept. 2006 (09I039); written in the year of his death, it contains a lot more of the nervous energy one expects of a much younger man, using the piano frequently as a coloristic instrument while the strings carry the melodic burden.
